The week leading up to Easter is widely celebrated in Andalucía - called Semana Santa, the Holy Week. The atmosphere is usually solemn and towns are full of color, art, fervour and extravagant processions, accompanied by music, inviting incense and floral scents. All week long, religious brotherhoods or fraternities parade through the streets carrying thrones - huge floats carried by hundreds of people. Each is an artistic masterpiece with its own distinctive characteristics, with life-size wooden statues of biblical characters. As Easter Sunday arrives with news of the Resurrection of Christ, the tense and solemn atmosphere change - plenty of joy and excitement now flood the streets to accompany the last parade, festooned with flowers and people indulge in traditional sweets and pastries.
